Daphne Assimakopoulou
West African Dance
About
Dance to uplifting percussion music, ground your body, elevate your spirit, relieve tension, release negative emotions and experience joy. All with this earthy & soulful, yet dynamic & explosive dance from West Africa which offers a full-body workout, encourages self-expression, reconnects with vital & primal instincts, promotes self-transcendence through repetitive movements and fosters community bonding though group dancing.
The workshop includes a warm-up, learning traditional dance & song from Guinea/Mali and a cool-down stretch. No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to embrace the African Rhythm and let it heal both body and spirit.
Daphne is a dancer, teacher, choreographer and musician with BA & MA degrees from Bryn Mawr College and Laban Center. Passionate about African dance, she trained in the USA, Europe and West Africa.
Teaching since 2000, she pioneered Greece’s African dance scene. In 2016 she began teaching annually in Thailand and in 2021 she became certified in ‘Primitive Expression’ (Dance-Rhythm-Therapy). Daphne continues to explore African dance’s healing power, sharing its joy worldwide.
